With little fanfare and even fewer details, the Goodyear City Council approved a rezoning request on land owned by Microsoft Corp. this week to allow for light industrial uses, 60-foot metal buildings and chain link fences on the property.

Throughout the council’s meeting, the computer industry giant was never mentioned by name and the project was only referred to as “PHX 10-11.”

Jordan Rose, the attorney representing Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) in the rezoning case said during the Dec. 17 meeting that the company was “excited to come to Goodyear” without revealing any details of its plans for the site. No renderings or other details have been made publicly available.

“They are thrilled to be working with Goodyear,” Rose said in an email. “The mayor, council and staff have been terrific and they are looking forward to moving dirt in 2019!”

In August, Phoenix Business Journalreported that Microsoft bought the 259-acre site for nearly $48 million. The company has not divulged any of its intentions for the site, and city officials only referred to it as a “technology center” during the meeting and in public documents.

At the meeting, Councilman Bill Stipp said the council had several executive session meetings about the parcel.

Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord said the project was “kind of one of those things where I want to stand up and say ‘Yippee,’ but I won’t.”
