Two years ago, Greater Phoenix Economic Council President and CEO Chris Camacho received a call from a national consultant asking him to immediately fly to Utah, to see a promising startup.

That trip to Salt Lake City helped land what might be 2,000 jobs from a fledgling alternative fuel semi-truck maker Nikola Motor Co., which announced earlier this year it would locate its headquarters in Arizona.

When Camacho arrived in Utah in December 2016, he had company. Nikola had brought in about 500 investors and economic developers for a showcase meant to kick off bidding for the headquarters and help the company land funding.
