Despite recommendations from staff, the City Council has unanimously approved rezoning for 776 acres in the southern part of the city for a major development.

The area is called the Anderson Russell Planned Area Development, which is located south of the intersection of Anderson Road and Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway. The area would be the home of a separate but still integrated community. It would likely have housing, retail, businesses, schools and parks.

On Tuesday, the council heard from both city staff and the lawyer representing the landowner about the potential to rezone the area.
