A $15 million federal grant to build roads to the Inland Port of Arizona in Coolidge — home of Nikola Motor Co.’s proposed manufacturing plant — has helped to elevate the project’s legitimacy on a national level, developers of the industrial park said.

Jackob Andersen, president and CEO of the project’s developer Saint Holdings, said the funding award, known as a federal Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development, or BUILD Transportation Discretionary Grant, acknowledges the site is “nationally recognized as one of the key industrial projects” underway.

The company previously worked with the city of Coolidge and Pinal County to apply for federal infrastructure grants, but they were based on projects the site was working to win, not companies that had committed to locate there, such as Nikola.
