PHOENIX – A Valley immigration lawyer is working around the clock to help get a man out of Afghanistan.

The young Afghan, named Zabi, has been an interpreter and served alongside the U.S. Marines.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend of Darius Amiri, a lawyer with Rose Law Group in Scottsdale, reached out, asking him to help out Zabi.

“He saw combat. He was right there alongside American troops, getting shot at, really putting himself at risk,” said Amiri.

Amiri is now in direct contact with Zabi, as he tries to get to the airport where U.S. soldiers are.

Amiri has been getting messages from Afghanistan, some of them with audible gunshots in the background.

“At this point, I am going way beyond being a lawyer and just being a human being,” said Amiri.

  • UPDATE – Saturday, 8:38 a.m.: Amiri tells Rose Law Group Reporter that Zabi is “currently outside the gate trying to connect with some marines who we’ve managed to get his contact information to. It’s so sad because he’s so close but it’s very hard to get up to the front with all the crowds, the gunfire, and the Taliban presence.” Amiri also says that Zabi emailed him about an attempted suicide bomber in the crowd who has been detained.
  • UPDATE 2 – Sunday, 3 a.m.: The latest from Amiri: “We have confirmed our guy Zabi and his wife made it in!!!!! They are finally safe inside the airport after almost 3 days of trying to get in. It was a special operation conducted by a marine sergeant whose wife found out about what we were doing on social media and reached out to me on Instagram and helped coordinate between parties.”
