It won’t exactly be the old “Dodgertown” in Vero Beach, Florida, but the Texas Rangers will still have something unique when they open their own housing facility next spring in Surprise.

The Surprise City Council last week approved construction of the team’s housing complex across from Surprise Stadium, 15930 N. Bullard Ave.

When it opens in January, the Rangers will become the only team in Major League Baseball to own a dorm-like facility that will keep players near their spring training and minor league facilities. And it will also solidify the team’s commitment to staying in Surprise long-term.

“This is our home,” said Paul Kruger, the Rangers’ director of minor league operations, who led the team’s effort to build the facility. “This is where we want to be.”
