Meet The Candidates For Phoenix Mayor And City Council, Insight From Rose Law Group Attorney Tom Galvin

By Jen Fifield | Arizona Republic

The Phoenix mayor and four City Council seats are up for grabs in November.

Mayor Kate Gallego faces two challengers on the ballot, Merissa Hamilton and Tim Seay. Both say they are running for office in Phoenix for the first time because the city needs better leadership, but are going up against a recently elected incumbent who has raised more than $1 million.

The mayoral and council election is officially nonpartisan, but Gallego and Seay are Democrats and Hamilton is Republican.

“The Phoenix City Council is going through a transitional and transformative period as a majority of the council members will be serving for less than 2 years, at their positions, by the time we are done with the election. Councilwomen Stark and Guardado are favored to be re-elected. However, all eyes are on District 1 and District 7, which are two very different districts but both feature competitive races. We should know on election night how District 1 turns out but it’s very possible that District 7 is headed toward a runoff in March 2021. All of the candidates in District 7 have a record of substantial public service and each have strong bases of support. It will come down to turnout and enthusiasm and all of them are capable of qualifying for the runoff.”
